4. Aguilar Castle: The Eagle’s Nest Overlooking Cathar Country

First mentioned in the 12th century, this medieval fortress is aptly nicknamed “the eagle’s nest” due to its hilltop position at an altitude of 296 metres. From this strategic vantage point, the castle surveyed the roads to Narbonne and Carcassonne, controlling key routes and regional defence.

The castle’s location in the Corbières hills also offers stunning panoramic views as far as Mount Canigou in the Pyrenees. Despite its lower elevation, the remains of Aguilar Castle’s six towers make it a fascinating site to visit within the 5 Sons of Carcassonne network.
