This year, we finally decided to book a table to celebrate my birthday and see for ourselves whether Les Grands Buffets really lived up to the hype.

Getting a Reservation at Les Grands Buffets

To experience Les Grands Buffets Narbonne, it is essential to plan ahead. This is not a place you can just walk into. Reservations must be made in advance and can only be made through the restaurant’s website. After submitting your email, you’ll receive a link to choose your table and date.

The restaurant offers a choice of five beautifully decorated spaces:

1. La salle Max Le Verrier (Art Deco style)
2. La salle Ann Carrington
3. La Tente d’Aaparat Jean Baptiste Nolin
4. Le Salon Doré Jean de la Fontaine
5. Le Jardin Hervé di Rosa

PERSONAL TIP: In advance of making your reservation, we recommend that you research the different dining rooms available at Les Grands Buffets.

Each room has its own character, so choosing the right one can add a special touch to your visit. For my birthday celebration, we opted for La salle Max Le Verrier. This set the tone perfectly for the lavish experience to come.

The restaurant is open 365 days a year, but it has set service times. For lunch, guests are welcomed between 12:00 and 13:30, with the restaurant closing at 16:30. In the evening, service runs from 19:15 to 21:15, and the restaurant closes at 00:00.

PERSONAL TIP: Your choice of booking time is important. It affects how long you have to enjoy the unique experience of eating at Les Grands Buffets. We’d strongly recommend booking the earliest time slot available to maximise your visit!

First Impressions

At first, the venue didn’t really seem to match the reputation of Les Grands Buffets Narbonne. We were surprised that such a lavish restaurant is tucked away in a leisure complex. When we arrived, school groups were waiting outside for swimming lessons, and other visitors were heading in for bowling and ice skating!

However, once inside, all of that is forgotten! The interior is surprisingly cosy, with intimate dining rooms and elegant décor that immediately make you feel that you’re somewhere special. Despite the unusual exterior, the atmosphere quickly immerses you in the experience, and the bustle of the leisure complex outside fades into the background.

PERSONAL TIP: There is a large free car park at Les Grands Buffets. However, you’re sharing it with other leisure centre visitors. For a relaxed experience, arrive early and enjoy a drink at the Private Bowling Pub bar.

The Buffet Experience

Visually, Les Grands Buffets makes an immediate impression. The menu alone is enormous and sets the tone for the experience to come. Polished wooden panels, Art Deco touches, sparkling crystal glassware and tables laid with multiple sets of silverware all add to the sense of occasion.

At its heart, Les Grands Buffets is still a buffet. However, it feels more like a lavish French banquet than a traditional all-you-can-eat restaurant.

There are towering displays of lobster, oysters mounted on silver platters, enormous cuts of meat waiting to be carved, mountains of cheese and a dedicated foie gras station. All of this creates an immediate sense of abundance and decadence. But of course, the real question is whether the food lives up to the spectacle!

The Entrées

For us, the starters were one of the highlights of the meal. It was a real treat to sample different varieties of foie gras and the seafood selection.

In particular, the crevettes and salmon were excellent. The lobster, however, was slightly disappointing. It was a little dry, which felt like a shame given that it is one of the restaurant’s signature luxuries.

Main Courses

As you would expect, there is lots of choice for the main courses. You can eat as much as you want from a menu that includes a wide selection of rotisserie meats, fish and Chef’s suggestions.

Live cooking stations for the main course add plenty of atmosphere. Watching the Chefs prepare enormous cuts of meat to order is impressive, although it does mean queueing while your food is cooked. Whilst some of the meats were very good, a few lacked the depth of flavour we had expected.

Cheese and Desserts

Where the restaurant truly excelled for us was the cheese selection. The variety and quality of the 111 cheeses were outstanding. It’s easy to see why the famous cheese room has a Guiness World Record and is such an iconic part of the experience. The desserts were also beautifully presented and provided a fittingly indulgent finish.

Be Aware of Section Closing Times!

When we made our booking, we did not realise that each section of the buffet closes at different times!

During lunch service, starters are available until 15:00, main courses until 15:30 and cheese and desserts until 16:15. Although we ate more than enough, we felt that these staggered closing times influenced the enjoyment and rhythm of our meal. Having chosen a 13:30 sitting, we felt were were a little rushed and conscious of the clock.

PERSONAL TIP: For a leisurely eating experience, book your table as early as possible!

How Much Does Les Grands Buffets Cost?

The current price of Les Grands Buffets is €65.90 per person. A deposit is required at the time of booking and the remaining balance is paid in advance of your visit. Cancellation conditions apply, but these are made very clear at the time of booking. We really appreciated the transparent communication when we booked and in subsequent email reminders.

It is worth noting that drinks are not included in the price of the buffet. They are an additional cost which you pay for on the day. However, the good news is that all wine and champagne served in the restaurant are charged at producer’s prices!

PERSONAL TIP: An additional perk of eating at Les Grands Buffets is that you can purchase bottles of wine and champagne at producer’s prices to take home. Furthermore, if you drank the same bottle of wine or champagne during your meal, it will be deducted from your final bill!

Is Les Grands Buffets Worth It?

For us, yes – Les Grands Buffets is absolutely worth experiencing at least once! However, it is important to understand exactly what you are paying for. Les Grands Buffets is a high-end buffet experience rather than a quiet, intimate restaurant meal.

What stands out most about Les Grands Buffets is the spectacle of it all. From the theatrical presentation of the food to the sheer variety on offer. Les Grands Buffets is a visually impressive experience from start to finish. Even before you begin eating, the scale and presentation make it feel like something quite unique.

Like most buffets, wine is served at the table, but you collect your own food. Even though there is an impressive amount of choice of food for the price, there is still a natural limit to how much you can realistically eat and enjoy in one sitting!

Perhaps the most unusual aspect, though, is its location. It is slightly surprising to find such an elaborate dining experience set within a leisure complex, alongside bowling, ice skating and swimming facilities. However, once you step inside the restaurant itself, that outside world quickly disappears.

So, Les Grands Buffets in Narbonne may not be a traditional fine dining experience, but it doesn’t try to be. Instead, it offers something different – a unique dining experience that is indulgent, abundant and memorable. For that reason alone, we felt it was well worth the visit, especially as part of a special occasion or a visit to Narbonne.

Carcassonne Christmas Lights & Festive Decorations

As night falls, Carcassonne’s Christmas lights bring an extra layer of magic to the city. Streets and public spaces are decorated with beautiful illuminated displays that create a cosy evening atmosphere, perfect for a gentle stroll after dark. The lights add colour and warmth to the historic centre, making December evenings especially photogenic.

Head to Place Gambetta to explore the enchanted garden. Here a dazzling, colour-changing Christmas tree towers above the surrounding light displays. The square also hosts festive entertainment for all ages, with wooden chalets selling artisanal products and seasonal attractions such as sleigh-shaped bumper cars.

The festivities continue in Place André Chénier, located in front of Carcassonne’s railway station. Here, a large Ferris wheel dominates the square, alongside additional rides and attractions set beneath sparkling Christmas lights.

Events & Family Activities During La Magie de Noël in Carcassonne

La Magie de Noël features a programme of seasonal entertainment, offering activities that appeal to both families and adults including various concerts and parades. While the exact events can vary each year, the focus remains on creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere rather than a large-scale commercial fair.

Highlights include the Marche aux Flambeaux which marks the opening of the festivities in Carcassonne. In addition, there is a spectacular sound and light display on the ancient stone walls of the medieval Château Comtal in La Cité de Carcassonne.

Personal Tip: Check times and dates for the sound and light display here to avoid disappointment.

Visiting Carcassonne in December

December is an appealing time to visit Carcassonne if you prefer fewer crowds and a slower pace. Temperatures are cooler than in summer, but are often still mild.

In December, the city feels calm and atmospheric, especially in the evenings when the Christmas lights are illuminated. La Magie de Noël adds a festive highlight to a winter visit without the busy feel of peak season.

What is Terra Vinea?

Terra Vinea is a remarkable subterranean attraction in Aude, where history and winemaking combine in a single immersive experience. Following in the steps of gypsum miners, visitors descend 80 metres below ground to explore 800 metres of tunnels that are now used for aging wine and to house a wine museum.

But how did a gypsum mine become a wine cellar? We were already intrigued …

Miners and Winemakers

For nearly two centuries after 1807, the tunnels of Terra Vinea were mined for gypsum, a mineral widely used in plaster. Walking through the galleries felt like stepping back in time, where arched ceilings and chiselled rock faces still bear witness to the miners’ toil.

We found it particularly fascinating that many of these miners were also winegrowers. Above ground, they tended their vines and helped shape the region’s rich winemaking heritage.

Remarkably, the underground world of gypsum extraction was always closely linked with the vineyards of the Corbières. This unique blend of industrial history and viticulture still lives on today at Terra Vinea, albeit in a slightly different format!

From Mine to Cellar

After the gypsum mine closed in 1992, the cool, stable conditions of the tunnels made them ideal for aging wine, a practice that continues today at Terra Vinea.

Rows of wine barrels line the passageways and fill natural alcoves, creating a striking underground cellar. Educational displays also trace the history of winemaking in the Corbières from Roman times through the ages.

This combination of underground architecture and wine heritage creates an atmosphere that is both immersive and informative. The whole experience provides an insight into the lives of the miners-turned-winemakers and the evolution of winemaking techniques in the region.

A Link to the Corbières Landscape

Terra Vinea is also notable for its integration with the surrounding landscape. Positioned deep under the Corbières hills, visitors leave the Visitor Centre aboard a small train before entering the mine. As the train winds its way up the hill, there are stunning views over the Corbières landscape.

Even the start of the tour hints at the connection between the underground world and the vineyards above, highlighting the close relationship between the land, its resources and the people who shaped it.

Exploring the Underground Experience at Terra Vinea

Once inside Terra Vinea, visitors embark on a journey that blends history, atmosphere and storytelling. The carefully staged route brings the underground mine to life, offering moments of surprise and immersion that go far beyond a simple museum visit.

Depending on the season, visitors explore the tunnels either with a professional guide or unaccompanied with an audio guide. We visited in September and appreciated being able to discover the story of wine at our own pace.

The Descent into the Mine

After leaving the train, our small group filed through an unassuming door and we began our descent into the underground world.

A staircase of around 120 steps led us down through a carved stone tunnel to an impressive long, wooden gallery, evoking the effort and danger of mining life. As we walked, the echo of clanking mining sounds enhanced the sense of entering another world in another time!

The Cathedral Cellar

At the foot of the stairs, the space suddenly opened into a vast, vaulted chamber known as the Cathedral Cellar. Here, a stunning sound and light show transformed the underground mine into an immersive spectacle.

Lights, music and storytelling successfully showcased the history and beauty of the site. We thought the amazing natural acoustics of this underground space made the experience even more atmospheric and memorable. It was certainly a striking introduction to the underground world of Terra Vinea!

Walking the Tunnels

Beyond the impressive Cathedral Cellar, the route continued through around 800 metres of spacious, dimly lit galleries. The clever lighting maintained a sense of being underground while still ensuring visitors feel comfortable and can see!

Along the way, the tunnels opened into larger chambers and passages that charted the history of winemaking in the region. Displays included old winemaking machinery and vehicles, a Cooper’s Workshop showing how wine casks were built and even a full-size horse-drawn cart!

These displays sat alongside other highlights such as a Gallo-Roman villa and a medieval tavern carved into the rock. These replicas showed how wine has been at the heart of local life across the centuries.

Rows of wine barrels, interpretive panels and original black and white film footage, tied the story together. We got a real sense of the tunnels’ layered history with their continued use for wine aging today.

Wine Tasting and Visitor Experience

After emerging from the depths of the mine into daylight, we made our way back to the Visitor Centre on foot for the complimentary wine tasting which is included in the ticket price.

During our visit, we sampled four wines (one white, one rosé, and two reds) as well as a local Muscat. The tasting was unhurried and gave us time to appreciate the different types of wine and grape varieties.

An attentive staff member talked about each wine and was happy to answer any questions. We left with a bottle of the rosé we enjoyed most, making a perfect souvenir of our Terra Vinea experience!

Tips for Visiting Terra Vinea

Getting There and Parking

Terra Vinea is located in the small village of Portel-des-Corbières, around 20 km south of Narbonne. The easiest way to reach this attraction is by car. There is ample parking on site, suitable for cars and camper vans. In addition, there is a charging station available for electric vehicles.

Guided and Self-Guided Visits

Out of season, visits to Terra Vinea are usually self-guided with an audio guide. Conveniently, this allows you to explore at your own pace. However, in the peak summer months, there are guided tours that provide additional context and an opportunity to ask questions.

Accessibility

At the start of the visit, a tourist train transports all visitors uphill from the Visitor Centre to the entrance of the mine.

Once inside the mine, there is a descent of about 120 steps. However, it is worth knowing that after the first staircase, the descent is staggered.

To enjoy your visit, good walking shoes are recommended. Warm clothing is also advisable as the underground temperature at Terra Vinea is around 16°C, even in summer.

Personal Tip: The tunnels themselves have good headroom and are wide and comfortable to walk through. Personally, we did not feel claustrophobic despite being underground.

When to Visit Terra Vinea

Terra Vinea is open year-round, but the experience varies with the seasons. The cool underground climate (around 16°C) makes it a refreshing escape in the heat of summer but expect more crowds during peak season.

Personal Tip: We visited on a September afternoon and found it very quiet at Terra Vinea. We explored the tunnels at our leisure with a handful of other visitors. This made the visit feel even more atmospheric and immersive.

Dining and Boutique

For those wanting to make a day of their visit, Terra Vinea has an on-site restaurant called Le Grenache. This is located directly above the boutique in the Visitor Centre.

Open daily for lunch, it’s a convenient spot to enjoy a meal before or after exploring the tunnels. The boutique itself is also worth a browse, offering a selection of Terra Vinea wines, regional products and souvenirs to take home.

Who Will Enjoy Terra Vinea?

Terra Vinea will appeal to a wide range of visitors: history lovers, wine enthusiasts, families with children and anyone curious about unusual sites. While the wine tasting is clearly for adults, the underground galleries, reconstructions and light show provide plenty of interest for all ages.

Ticket Prices and Visit Duration

A visit to Terra Vinea typically lasts around 1.5 hours. Admission prices are:

• Adults: 16.50 €
• Teenagers aged 13–17: 14.90 €
• Children aged 5–12: 9.90 €

The ticket includes access to the underground tunnels, historical displays and the complimentary wine tasting for adults.

Why We Visited Narbo Via Narbonne

As locals living just outside Narbonne in the Minervois, we’re always on the lookout for nearby places to explore. As a result, Narbo Via had been on our list for a while. The museum is modern and eye-catching and we’d often driven past it thinking, “We really should go in one day.”  We finally made the visit on a cloudy Sunday in May and here’s what we thought …

What to Expect at Narbo Via Museum

A Striking Modern Building

The building itself is impressive in both size and design. In fact, it made us feel quite small standing next to its vast, sleek structure. The museum’s modern, almost industrial style is a bold contrast to Narbonne’s rich Roman heritage. However, the exterior façade is designed to reflect the appearance of Roman concrete which creates an intriguing blend of past and present.

Our visit began right at the entrance to the museum. A large map of Europe shows Narbonne’s place within the Roman Empire, immediately setting the historical context.

Inside, the museum is incredibly spacious and bright. It has appealing, wide open galleries that invited us to take our time and wander through the exhibits.

Signage about the artefacts throughout the museum is clear and informative. In addition, we appreciated the fact that all information panels are written in French, English and Spanish. This makes them accessible for a wide range of visitors.

Throughout the museum, there are also engaging digital projections that bring the remains of artefacts to life. The use of interactive alcoves provides an immersive experience. Roman buildings and other elements of daily Roman life are reconstructed before your eyes, so that you can experience how the city would have looked over 2,000 years’ ago!

Highlights from the Exhibits

One of the most striking features of Narbo Via is the Lapidary Wall that greets you on entering the museum. This dramatic visual display transports you back in time and immerses you in the scale and grandeur of Roman Narbonne.

The Lapidary Wall stretches an impressive 76 metres long and 10 metres high. Amazingly, it displays around 800 carved stone blocks retrieved from across the ancient city.  It’s not just impressive in scale, but also in how it reflects the city’s layered past, quite literally stacked before your eyes!

Beyond the Lapidary Wall, the museum is divided into six thematic sections, each offering a different window into Roman life:

• The First Roman Colony in Gaul
• The City and its Monuments
• Society and Necropolises (Funerary Artefacts)
• Wealthy Urban Residences
• A Merchant Port on the Mediterranean
• Early Christianity in the Metropolis of Narbonne

Besides the many well-preserved artefacts on display throughout the museum, some other personal highlights included the time spent in the immersive digital alcoves. In particular, we enjoyed the short films that vividly reconstructed Le Temple du Capitole and the different types of Roman ships that once sailed into Narbonne’s ancient port.

Another highlight of our visit were the intricately preserved mosaic floors that were discovered during archaeological digs on the Clos de la Lombarde site in Narbonne.

Of course, the smaller, everyday objects on display in the museum (eg. statues, coins, ceramics and games) also really bring the ancient world to life.

Overall, we left Narbo Via with a real sense of how much history still lies beneath our feet as we wander around modern Narbonne from day-to-day.

Narbo Via is open every day except Mondays, with hours that vary slightly by season.

Combined tickets are also available for other local Roman museums like L’Horreum in Narbonne (an intriguing Roman underground warehouse) and Amphoralis (Roman pottery workshops) in nearby Sallèles-d’Aude.

Personal Tip: Narbo Via is FREE to visit on the first Sunday of each month, including the temporary exhibition – but you must book your tickets online in advance. We took advantage of this offer, which made our experience at Narbo Via even more rewarding. The temporary exhibit during our visit was “Escale en Méditerranée romaine – Les ports antiques de Narbonne”.

Café/Restaurant Facilities:

At the entrance to the museum, there is a small café/restaurant called Cadence au Musée. This is open from 10:00 to 17:00 (closed Sundays and Mondays). However, the café was closed on the day we visited.

Limited on-street free parking is available near the Narbo Via museum. However, as locals who frequently visit Narbonne, we’ve got a better personal tip for free parking in the next section!

A Local’s Tips on Visiting Narbo Via

When to Go:

If you want a quieter experience, we recommend visiting Narbo Via out of season or on a hot summer’s day, when most people are enjoying the beach at nearby Narbonne Plage.

Weekends can be a bit busier with local visitors, especially when the weather is cooler. As with most attractions, the museum is usually less busy earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon, so time your visit accordingly if you prefer to avoid the crowds.

Another good time to visit Narbo Via is to take advantage of temporary exhibitions and special events organised by the museum. We were lucky enough to see a contemporary dance performance during our visit.

Where to Park for Narbo Via:

Our go-to parking spot is the free car park behind Narbonne’s theatre and cinema complex. Conveniently, this car park is only a short 5-minute walk to the museum. From here, you can also catch the free navette shuttle into Narbonne’s historic centre or enjoy a 15–20 minute stroll along the picturesque Canal de la Robine.

The African Reserve of Sigean (Réserve Africaine de Sigean) is a large wildlife park located between Narbonne and Perpignan in the Aude department of southern France. Spanning over 300 hectares, the park is home to more than 3,800 animals, including bears, chimpanzees, flamingos, gazelles, giraffes, lions, rhinos and zebras.

The park is divided into two main areas:

• a drive-through safari, where visitors can observe animals like bears, lions and antelope from the comfort of their own cars
• a walking section, which includes enclosures, aviaries and paved, shaded trails.

Established in 1974, the reserve is committed to wildlife conservation and is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). This means it must meet high standards not only in animal care and housing, but also in conservation, research, and public education — reflecting its broader role in protecting biodiversity.

Unlike some modern zoos, the African Reserve of Sigean doesn’t aim for manicured perfection. Instead, it offers a more rugged, natural setting, designed to resemble the animals’ native environments as closely as possible.

The park is located within a protected natural area on the edge of the Bages-Sigean lagoon (étang) — a coastal wetland rich in birdlife that adds to the sense of immersion in nature. This wilder, more open layout is part of the park’s charm, but it’s something to be aware of when planning your visit — especially if you’re used to more polished animal parks.

African Reserve Sigean Review: Our Experience as Locals

We visited the African Reserve of Sigean in May and arrived mid-morning, giving us plenty of time to explore both the drive-through safari and the walking section at a relaxed pace. The drive-through safari is well signposted and takes you through four zones where animals roam freely — including bears, zebras, giraffes and white rhinos.

The Drive-Through Safari

One of the highlights was how surprisingly close you can get to the animals, especially the bears. At times, they were lying right on the road and bringing traffic to a complete standstill!

While these moments were memorable, they also caused frequent traffic jams. Understandably, many visitors also stop frequently to take photos of the animals. Rangers do their best to keep cars moving, but the congestion in the drive-through safari is noticeable.

We felt that the sheer number of vehicles — many with engines idling — created unnecessary noise and pollution, which could be stressful for the animals. In our view, the experience would be improved if access were further limited or replaced by guided safaris in purpose-built vehicles, both for the sake of the animals and the visitors.

By the time we reached the lion enclosure, we had been in the car for almost 2 hours and we were starting to fatigue. Especially, Olivier who had also driven 40-minutes from our medieval village, Bize-Minervois.

Overall, though, we did see a good variety of wildlife on the drive-through safari, and the effort to give them space and freedom of movement was clear.

Exploring the Walking Safari Park

The walking section of the park, by contrast, was a real highlight — and we much preferred it overall. It’s well laid out, with plenty of shade, wide paths and some low viewing windows that are ideal for younger children.

The setting along the Bages-Sigean lagoon adds to the atmosphere, as does the African Plain Observatory, where you can see animals grazing against a scenic backdrop. One of the most memorable moments was watching the pelicans and flamingos being fed, which drew a crowd and offered great photo opportunities.

There’s also a small animal area where children can climb up and over ladders to enter and interact with friendly pygmy goats. Although by that point, our young granddaughter had dozed off in her pushchair!

The Reptile House (Le Vivarium) was another family favourite. It was busy and clearly a hit with children, who could observe crocodiles and other reptiles up close — even watching them submerged in their tanks.

Throughout the park, the animals appeared well cared for, and many have been bred in captivity as part of conservation efforts, which adds to the educational value of the visit.

Is the African Reserve of Sigean Worth Visiting?

Overall, yes — the African Reserve of Sigean is well worth a visit. While it’s a natural choice for families, we also saw couples, solo travellers and visitors of all ages enjoying their day. Whether you’re an animal lover, a nature enthusiast, or a keen photographer, there’s plenty here to appreciate.

Best Time of Day and Season to Go

To make the most of your visit, arrive early in the day as animals tend to be more active in the cooler morning hours. During hotter parts of the day, they often rest in the shade and can be harder to spot.

We chose an overcast day in May, which was perfect for walking and wildlife viewing. The park is open year-round but expect it to be much busier during the peak summer season and school holidays.

What to Bring

Pack smart for a comfortable visit:

• Picnic or snacks (though there are food options, bringing your own is a good backup).
• Plenty of water to stay hydrated.
• Hat and suncream to protect yourself from the sun.
• Mobile phone for photos and to download the official app, which offers audio guides and animal checklists.

• Camera for capturing the amazing wildlife moments.
• Pushchair or stroller if you’re visiting with young children, as there’s a lot of walking and some hills that can tire little legs!
• Dress comfortably and in layers as temperatures can vary, and good walking shoes are essential.

Drive-Through Safari Vehicle Rules

The self-drive safari must be done in your own vehicle — suitable vehicles include cars, camper vans, or buses. For safety reasons, bicycles, motorcycles, and convertibles are not allowed on the safari route.

How Long to Allow for your Visit

Plan on at least one hour for the drive-through safari but be aware that traffic jams can extend this considerably. On our visit, it took nearly two hours to complete the safari drive due to congestion!

The walking part of the animal park is recommended to take around 2 hours 30 minutes to fully enjoy the exhibits and animals. Visitors are also encouraged to repeat the drive-through safari at another time during the day to catch any animals they may have missed on their first visit.

Accessibility and Visitor Conduct

The park is mostly accessible for strollers and wheelchairs on the main paved paths, but some steep hills may pose challenges. Visitors are kindly asked to respect the animals by not feeding or disturbing them. It is also important to follow all ranger instructions, especially during the drive-through safari, to ensure everyone’s safety.

Dogs are allowed throughout most of the park, provided they are kept on a short leash at all times. However, dogs are not permitted inside the Great Aviary, the Vivarium or the pygmy goat enclosure.

Don’t Miss: African Plain Observatory

One of the park’s highlights is the African Plain Observatory — a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking an 18-hectare plain home to one of the largest herds of herbivores in Europe.

From Narbonne: The park is just a 30-minute drive from Narbonne, mainly via the A9 motorway. It’s a straightforward route — take the A9 southbound and exit at Sigean. Follow the signs to the Reserve, which is well signposted once you’re nearby.

From Béziers: It takes about 50 minutes by car from Béziers via the A9 motorway heading south. The route is direct and well signposted towards Sigean.

From Carcassonne: It takes about 1 hour by car from Carcassonne, using the A61 motorway westbound, then joining the A9 southbound. Take the exit for Sigean and follow local signs to the Reserve.

Key Tips for Getting There

What would we do differently next time?

Next visit, we’d start with the walking part of the park and save the drive-through safari for later in the day. This way, we hope to avoid some of the traffic congestion that builds up during peak times.

Another change we’ll definitely make is to enjoy our picnic lunch at the African Plain Observatory — a truly breathtaking spot with panoramic views and abundant wildlife. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak in the atmosphere of the Reserve’s protected natural environment on the edge of the Bages-Sigean Étang lagoon.

This attraction features an amazing glass walkway that allows you to hang over the void and peer into its depths!  It took us some courage to walk to the end of the walkway, but it’s an amazing experience and a unique way to appreciate the size of the chasm.

Experience Roman Engineering Beneath Your Feet

The Roman Horreum in Narbonne is an impressive network of stone tunnels and chambers built 5 metres below ground.

These u-shaped structures were designed to regulate temperature and protect a range of stored goods.  As you walk around the atmospheric passageways today, it is easy to visualise them full of grain, olive oil, wine and other types of food.

Two remarkably well-preserved subterranean galleries are open to the public:

• The West Gallery is 50 metres long.
• The North Gallery is 37.7 metres long.

Both Roman galleries can be explored on foot and experienced first-hand. Incredibly, these underground tunnels are an impressive 7.25 metres wide with vaulted ceilings that reach a height of 2.3 metres!

It is amazing that after more than two millennia, the thick walls and carefully designed passageways are still standing!  These subterranean structures really showcase the ingenuity of Roman engineering. As a result, the Roman Horreum in Narbonne was listed as a French Historic Monument in 1961.
