Standing in the heart of Narbonne, the Donjon Gilles Aycelin is a must-visit for history lovers and those seeking the best panoramic views of the city. Built in the late 13th century, this imposing medieval square tower forms part of the Archbishop’s Palace and remains one of Narbonne’s most iconic landmarks.

Standing at 42 metres high, with walls over 4 metres thick, the donjon’s towering presence dominates Narbonne’s skyline from far away. However, many visitors don’t realise that they can actually climb to the top for a breathtaking panoramic experience!

Climbing to the Top of the Donjon Gilles Aycelin
The top of the Donjon Gilles Aycelin is accessible via a narrow stone spiral staircase that consists of 162 steps! Along the way, you can catch your breath by stopping to admire the architecture of the four halls within the tower.

We chose a sunny but windy autumn day to climb to the top of the Donjon Gilles Aycelin. As we climbed the staircase, we could hear the wind whistling through the tower and we wondered what as waiting for us on the top terrace and parapet walk!

Personal Tip: Take care when walking around the parapets as they are very open to the elements! The original battlements are almost chest high. As a health and safety measure, there are iron railings in between. Below is a central sunken area with steep steps that lead up to the parapet walk.

The Views from the Top
Despite the windy conditions, we were blown away (literally!) by the stunning panoramic views from the top of the tower. It was such a clear day that we could see the hills of the distant Corbières, the Montagne Noire and even the Pyrenees!
Looking out over Narbonne’s terracotta rooftops and the autumn colours of the plane trees along the Canal de la Robine was also unforgettable! The climb may be steep, but the breathtaking scenery made it well worth the effort!

Personal Tip: The parapet walk at the top of the Donjon Gilles Aycelin is also the best place to capture stunning photographs of Narbonne’s imposing gothic Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur Cathedral. On the day we visited, the cathedral’s silhouette looked magnificent against the backdrop of the blue skies of southern France!

A Glimpse into Narbonne’s History
Beyond its spectacular views, the donjon also offers a fascinating glimpse into Narbonne’s medieval past. Work began on this defensive square tower in 1295, and it was completed in 1306 by the Archbishop Gilles Aycelin.

As you climb, you will find four halls inside the tower. Each of these are accessed via the winding spiral staircase:
- Salle hémisphérique (Hemispherical Room)
- Salle du trésor (Treasure Room)
- Chambre du Roi (King’s Chamber)
- Salle de défense (Defense Room)
The donjon’s robust stone walls and vaulted ceilings certainly showcase the architectural prowess of the period. This will interest anyone who loves history and heritage. However, the best part of the visit is climbing to the top of the tower and the wide-sweeping views!

Today, it is extremely peaceful when you are standing so high above the city of Narbonne. However, you can really appreciate the defensive advantage of the tower in the past. When you experience the 360-degree bird’s eye view over the Narbonnaise plain, you won’t forget it!
