1. Stroll the Medieval Streets

For over 6,000 years, people have inhabited Minerve, so wandering its narrow, cobbled streets is like stepping back in time. This medieval village is extremely picturesque to visit with weathered stone houses, small artisan shops and tiny passageways that invite you to explore and immerse yourself in its history.

At the northern entrance of the village, you will find the remains of the Candela tower. This is all that remains of the medieval castle.

From here, there is a wonderful view of Minerve and the impressive bridge that spans the gorge below. This stone viaduct features three arches and is 100 metres long and 40 metres high!

2. Discover the Ramparts

Part of the charm of Minerve is also its unique location.  Perched precariously on a rocky promontory, the village is surrounded by a steep gorge carved by two rivers: the River Cesse and the River Brian.

Walking the restored ramparts of Minerve enables visitors to appreciate the strategic location of the village, reflect on its history and enjoy fabulous views of the surrounding gorge.  From the ramparts, there are also various access points that lead down into the gorge below Minerve.

One of Minerve’s most striking natural features is the Pont Naturel. This is a natural limestone arch created by the underground flow of the Cesse River. You can reach it by taking various pathways down from the village to the dry riverbed below.  The Pont Naturel is especially accessible during the summer months when the river runs underground.

Minerve might be small, but it has a big story to tell. In 1210, during the Albigensian Crusade, the village became the site of a brutal siege led by Simon de Montfort. After days of bombardment, Minerve surrendered. Sadly, around 140 Cathars who refused to renounce their faith were burned at the stake where the two rivers meet.  Today, you can explore this dark but fascinating past at two small museums in the village.

The Musée Hurepel de Minerve uses miniature dioramas to bring the story of the Cathars and the siege of Minerve vividly to life. The museum has unique and creative exhibits that appeals to both adults and children.

Musée d’Archéologie et de Paléontologie

Just steps away, the Musée d’Archéologie et de Paléontologie offers a broader look at the region’s ancient history. How to Get to Minerve

Minerve is located in the department of Hérault in Occitanie and is accessible via the D10, D10E1 and the D147.  The village is 45 minutes by car from Narbonne, Carcassonne, or Béziers – making it an ideal day trip.

Parking in Minerve

The main car park for Minerve is accessible via the D10E1 and D147.  From the car park, there is a 250 metre walk to the village of Minerve – the return walk is fairly steep! Car park charges apply during the peak season (April until mid-November).  However, parking in Minerve is free from mid-November until the end of March.

Please note that Minerve is only accessible on foot.  Parking in the village of Minerve is strictly reserved for residents only.  However, parking spaces for visitors with reduced mobility are located alongside the D10.

When to Visit Minerve

The village of Minerve is a beautiful spot to visit all year round.  Each season brings its own rewards.  However, spring and autumn offer the best weather and fewer crowds. The village can be very hot in mid-summer and some shops and restaurants are closed in winter.

Accessibility at Minerve

The village streets are steep and cobbled in parts, so wear good shoes.  There are also steps in some places.  Parking spaces for visitors with reduced mobility are located alongside the D10. Access to the village is via the stone bridge.

Minerve may be small, but it offers a rare combination of historical depth, natural beauty and cultural charm. Eventually, you’ll reach an ancient stone pathway that dates back to medieval times, leading to a magnificent zigzagging chicane flanked by high stone walls. These fortified walls guide you upwards, each turn revealing more of the castle’s imposing structure.

When you reach the summit, the castle is divided into two main parts: the Lower Enclosure and the Upper Castle. The Lower Enclosure, measuring 60 by 25 metres, is surrounded by imposing outer walls rising 8 to 10 metres high. Exploring the Castle Ruins at Montségur

When you reach Montségur’s summit, prepare to be awestruck – not just by the remains of the grand castle walls, but by breathtaking panoramic vistas. While the ruins are modest compared to other Cathar Castles, their simplicity amplifies the site’s profound atmosphere.

Below the eastern wall, you’ll find terraced rocky remnants – once the foundation of a bustling community. Imagine narrow passages and houses that once clung to this steep hillside, housing the castle’s medieval inhabitants and extensive Cathar community.

The History of Montségur Castle

Of course, one of the main reasons to visit Montségur Castle is to learn about its rich history and to remember the fate of the Cathars who perished here in 1244.  In view of its historic significance, the castle has also been classified as a French Historic Monument since 1862.

Origins of the Castle

Montségur Castle‘s rich, layered history can be divided into three distinct phases.  The castle you can visit today isn’t the original structure that stood on this precipitous pog.  The first fortress, dating back to the 10th century, was already in ruins by the time the Cathar community arrived in the early 13th century.

From 1204, the castle transformed into Raymond de Péreille‘s formidable Cathar stronghold that stood until 1244.  The current ruins, built after 1244, stood guard until their abandonment in the 16th or 17th century, silently witnessing centuries of change.

The Cathar Connection

Between 1204 and 1244, Montségur Castle became synonymous with the Cathar faith, a Christian sect deemed heretical by the Catholic Church.  In the early 1200s, Cathars fleeing persecution found refuge here, transforming the site into their last major stronghold.

Below the walls of the main castle, you can still see traces of the remains of the community where 500 people once lived.

Siege of 1244: A Turning Point

The castle’s most famous moment came after the Albigensian Crusade.  In 1244, after a 10-month siege, Montségur Castle eventually fell to the forces of the French crown.

Over 200 Cathars chose to be burned alive rather than renounce their faith, cementing Montségur’s place in history as a symbol of religious resistance.  This tragedy marked the end of the Cathar movement in the South of France.

Weather and Visibility at Montségur Castle

It is worth knowing that the high location of Montségur Castle often plays tricks with the weather. At 1,207 metres, the castle is frequently surrounded by clouds, creating an ethereal, mystical atmosphere.

Don’t be discouraged by a foggy start – the rocky peak has its own microclimate. On our visit, we began our ascent shrouded in mist, only to emerge above the cloud base to find the castle basking in sunlight against a backdrop of brilliant blue skies.

Although some of the panoramic views were concealed by banks of cloud, this added an unforgettable element to our experience and photos!

Practical Tips for Visitors

How to Get to Montségur Castle

Montségur Castle is located off the D9 in the Ariège department, about a 90 minute drive south of Toulouse. The nearest town is Lavelanet, about 12 kilometres away. While public transportation is limited, the drive offers stunning views of the Pyrenean landscape.

Best Times to Visit

Spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant weather for visiting. Summer can be hot, especially during the climb, while winter visits risk snow and ice on the trail.

Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds and to avoid the heat in summer months.  At this time of day, it is magical to wander around the castle ruins without any other visitors in sight.

Parking and Initial Approach

Alongside the picturesque D9 at an altitude of 1,036 metres, you will come across a car parking layby for Montségur Castle.  This is located at the base of the pog in front of a small Visitor Centre.

From here (weather permitting!), you’ll see your first glimpse of the castle perched high above you – it’s an awe-inspiring sight that never fails to impress, even for locals!

Visitor Centre and Guided Tours

Tickets to visit Montségur Castle can be purchased from the small Visitor Centre, and you will also find toilet facilities here. 

If like us, you prefer to explore independently, there are helpful information panels about the castle’s history in French and English during the climb and around the castle grounds. However, guided tours are also available from the Visitor Centre.

Early records indicate a building on the site of Aguilar Castle from 1021. However, most of the castle’s fortifications were constructed from the mid 12^th century onwards until the 15^th century.

During its past, the castle played an important role in guarding the frontier between France and the Kingdom of Aragon. Its strategic location atop Eagle’s Rock allowed it to control the ancient route linking the Roussillon plain to the Corbières massif.

During the turbulent times of the Albigensian Crusade, Aguilar Castle also served as a refuge for Cathar heretics. In 1210, the castle was seized by Simon de Montfort, marking a significant moment in the castle’s history.

Traditional tours are available in French, English, and Spanish, while a special children’s tour is offered in French.

Back to the Beginning …

The origins of Carcassonne Castle can be traced back to a 6^th century BC fortified hilltop Oppidum. Later, the Romans recognised the strategic value of the site and added the first stone fortifications.  Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous expansions and renovations.

Trancavel Family, Catharism and Carcassonne Castle

In the 12^th century, Carcassonne Castle became a powerful feudal seat under Viscount Trencavel.  He gradually extended and fortified the castle.  The tiny Sainte-Marie Chapel was also built at this time next to the Pont Vieux.

In 1209, Carcassonne Castle became a target during the Albigensian Crusade. At the time, many Cathars were sheltering within the walls of the castle owing to Raymond Roger Trancavel‘s tolerant view of Catharism. After a 15-day siege, Trancavel surrendered the castle.

Kings of France and Carcassonne Castle

One of the castle’s most defining features is its impressive double-walled fortifications. In 1226, Carcassonne Castle became part of the French royal realm.  At that time, a final exterior rampart measuring 1,600 metres was added.

The castle served as an impregnable, strategic stronghold in the conflict between the Kingdom of France and the Kingdom of Aragon.

Viollet-le-Duc and the Restoration of Carcassonne Castle

After the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees, Carcassonne Castle was left abandoned until the 19th century.  An architect called Eugène Viollet-le-Duc then led an ambitious project to completely restore and renovate the city including the addition of the Narbonnaise Gate and slate tiles from the Montagne Noire on the turret roofs.

Lagrasse Abbey (L’Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse)

The inner courtyard has been redesigned into a ticket office. It now has a striking wooden roof, exposed beams, staircases, and timber walkways. These modern additions contrast with the original design. In the Middle Ages, the courtyard would have been open to the elements.

Although the restoration allows visitors to discover the castle’s rooms, some might find the polished finish less authentic than the rugged charm of other Cathar Castle ruins in the region.

Quéribus Castle is often called the “Last Cathar Castle“. These ruins are perched high on a rugged peak and provide stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
