Whilst the fortified village once extended up to the castle’s base, today the picturesque village of Termes runs along the banks of the River Sou, right below the castle. From the visitor centre, it’s a scenic 15-minute walk up a steep hill to reach the castle ruins.
TOP TIP: Termes Castle is perched high on a rocky outcrop. As a result, access is challenging for visitors with reduced mobility and pushchairs. To fully explore the site, visitors should be reasonably fit. However, you can still admire the castle’s dramatic ruins from the village of Termes and from scenic viewpoints along the D40.

Termes Castle is also renowned for the four-month-long siege led by Simon de Montfort in 1210 during the Albigensian Crusade.
In 1228, Termes Castle came under the control of the King of France after Olivier de Termes surrendered it.
