With such a strong reputation, expectations were high. We had heard locals talking about Les Grands Buffets Narbonne for years but had never found the right occasion to visit. This year, we finally decided to book a table to celebrate my birthday and see for ourselves whether Les Grands Buffets really lived up to the hype.

Getting a Reservation at Les Grands Buffets

To experience Les Grands Buffets Narbonne, it is essential to plan ahead. This is not a place you can just walk into. Reservations must be made in advance and can only be made through the restaurant’s website. After submitting your email, you’ll receive a link to choose your table and date.

The restaurant offers a choice of five beautifully decorated spaces:

1. La salle Max Le Verrier (Art Deco style)
2. La salle Ann Carrington
3. La Tente d’Aaparat Jean Baptiste Nolin
4. Le Salon Doré Jean de la Fontaine
5. Le Jardin Hervé di Rosa

PERSONAL TIP: In advance of making your reservation, we recommend that you research the different dining rooms available at Les Grands Buffets.

Each room has its own character, so choosing the right one can add a special touch to your visit. For my birthday celebration, we opted for La salle Max Le Verrier. This set the tone perfectly for the lavish experience to come.

The restaurant is open 365 days a year, but it has set service times. For lunch, guests are welcomed between 12:00 and 13:30, with the restaurant closing at 16:30. In the evening, service runs from 19:15 to 21:15, and the restaurant closes at 00:00.

PERSONAL TIP: Your choice of booking time is important. It affects how long you have to enjoy the unique experience of eating at Les Grands Buffets. We’d strongly recommend booking the earliest time slot available to maximise your visit!

First Impressions

At first, the venue didn’t really seem to match the reputation of Les Grands Buffets Narbonne. We were surprised that such a lavish restaurant is tucked away in a leisure complex. When we arrived, school groups were waiting outside for swimming lessons, and other visitors were heading in for bowling and ice skating!

However, once inside, all of that is forgotten! The interior is surprisingly cosy, with intimate dining rooms and elegant décor that immediately make you feel that you’re somewhere special. Despite the unusual exterior, the atmosphere quickly immerses you in the experience, and the bustle of the leisure complex outside fades into the background.

PERSONAL TIP: There is a large free car park at Les Grands Buffets. However, you’re sharing it with other leisure centre visitors. For a relaxed experience, arrive early and enjoy a drink at the Private Bowling Pub bar.

The Buffet Experience

Visually, Les Grands Buffets makes an immediate impression. The menu alone is enormous and sets the tone for the experience to come. Polished wooden panels, Art Deco touches, sparkling crystal glassware and tables laid with multiple sets of silverware all add to the sense of occasion.

At its heart, Les Grands Buffets is still a buffet. However, it feels more like a lavish French banquet than a traditional all-you-can-eat restaurant.

There are towering displays of lobster, oysters mounted on silver platters, enormous cuts of meat waiting to be carved, mountains of cheese and a dedicated foie gras station. All of this creates an immediate sense of abundance and decadence. But of course, the real question is whether the food lives up to the spectacle!

The Entrées

For us, the starters were one of the highlights of the meal. It was a real treat to sample different varieties of foie gras and the seafood selection.

In particular, the crevettes and salmon were excellent. The lobster, however, was slightly disappointing. It was a little dry, which felt like a shame given that it is one of the restaurant’s signature luxuries.

Main Courses

As you would expect, there is lots of choice for the main courses. You can eat as much as you want from a menu that includes a wide selection of rotisserie meats, fish and Chef’s suggestions.

Live cooking stations for the main course add plenty of atmosphere. Watching the Chefs prepare enormous cuts of meat to order is impressive, although it does mean queueing while your food is cooked. Whilst some of the meats were very good, a few lacked the depth of flavour we had expected.

Cheese and Desserts

Where the restaurant truly excelled for us was the cheese selection. The variety and quality of the 111 cheeses were outstanding. It’s easy to see why the famous cheese room has a Guiness World Record and is such an iconic part of the experience. The desserts were also beautifully presented and provided a fittingly indulgent finish.

Be Aware of Section Closing Times!

When we made our booking, we did not realise that each section of the buffet closes at different times!

During lunch service, starters are available until 15:00, main courses until 15:30 and cheese and desserts until 16:15. Although we ate more than enough, we felt that these staggered closing times influenced the enjoyment and rhythm of our meal. Having chosen a 13:30 sitting, we felt were were a little rushed and conscious of the clock.

PERSONAL TIP: For a leisurely eating experience, book your table as early as possible!

How Much Does Les Grands Buffets Cost?

The current price of Les Grands Buffets is €65.90 per person. A deposit is required at the time of booking and the remaining balance is paid in advance of your visit. Cancellation conditions apply, but these are made very clear at the time of booking. We really appreciated the transparent communication when we booked and in subsequent email reminders.

It is worth noting that drinks are not included in the price of the buffet. They are an additional cost which you pay for on the day. However, the good news is that all wine and champagne served in the restaurant are charged at producer’s prices!

PERSONAL TIP: An additional perk of eating at Les Grands Buffets is that you can purchase bottles of wine and champagne at producer’s prices to take home. Furthermore, if you drank the same bottle of wine or champagne during your meal, it will be deducted from your final bill!

Is Les Grands Buffets Worth It?

For us, yes – Les Grands Buffets is absolutely worth experiencing at least once! However, it is important to understand exactly what you are paying for. Les Grands Buffets is a high-end buffet experience rather than a quiet, intimate restaurant meal.

What stands out most about Les Grands Buffets is the spectacle of it all. From the theatrical presentation of the food to the sheer variety on offer. Les Grands Buffets is a visually impressive experience from start to finish. Even before you begin eating, the scale and presentation make it feel like something quite unique.

Like most buffets, wine is served at the table, but you collect your own food. Even though there is an impressive amount of choice of food for the price, there is still a natural limit to how much you can realistically eat and enjoy in one sitting!

Perhaps the most unusual aspect, though, is its location. It is slightly surprising to find such an elaborate dining experience set within a leisure complex, alongside bowling, ice skating and swimming facilities. However, once you step inside the restaurant itself, that outside world quickly disappears.

So, Les Grands Buffets in Narbonne may not be a traditional fine dining experience, but it doesn’t try to be. Instead, it offers something different – a unique dining experience that is indulgent, abundant and memorable. For that reason alone, we felt it was well worth the visit, especially as part of a special occasion or a visit to Narbonne.

The Nine Locks of Fonseranes on the Canal du Midi

The 9 Écluses de Fonseranes are an engineering marvel that never fails to impress both kids and adults. Watching boats navigate the impressive staircase of locks is endlessly fascinating – and it’s completely free to enjoy from the surrounding paths and gardens.

For a small fee, children and adults alike can also step back in time with the immersive cinema experience “Voyage dans le temps sur le Canal du Midi”. Alternatively, why not hire a small boat and enjoy some family time on the water, or take a scenic ride back to Béziers on the little tourist train?

Personal Tip: If you want to avoid paying for parking, we recommend parking for free at Parking Rue Renée Boyer in Béziers. From here, you can enjoy a scenic walk across the Pont Canal over the River Orb, then follow the banks of the Canal du Midi all the way to the foot of the 9 Écluses de Fonseranes.

La Scène de Bayssan

Not far from the 9 Écluses de Fonseranes is La Scène de Bayssan, a free-to-visit space that’s ideal for families.  It features a large well-equipped playground suitable for children aged 1-12, making it a great stop if you’re visiting the area with younger kids.

For older children and teenagers, there are also mountain bike trails, a skate park and a multi-sports court with basketball hoops, football goals and table tennis tables.

La Scène de Bayssan is also Bézier’s popular outdoor events venue. If you want to add a cultural element to your visit, it’s worth checking what’s on. Throughout the year, there are family-friendly concerts, theatre performances and festivals, some of which are free.

Béziers Adventure Park

Set in a forest just outside the city, Béziers Adventure Park is a fantastic option for more active families. The outdoor centre offers a range of accrobranche (high ropes) courses suitable for children (and adults!) aged 3 and above.

There’s also a mini farm that is free to visit, along with additional activities such as paintballing and canyoning for older kids and teens. It’s an excellent way to burn off some energy in a safe, fun and natural setting.

Together, these three places make a wonderful full-day outing that combines nature, adventure, and culture – all within a short distance of Béziers and without needing to spend a lot of money.

You can stand along the canal to watch for free, or choose to sit in the temporary stands set up for the events. Kids will love the excitement as contestants are knocked into the water, and it’s a wonderfully unique way to experience a living local tradition that you won’t find elsewhere in the region.

For a quieter side of Sète, the Musée International des Arts Modestes (MIAM) is a surprisingly kid friendly art museum. This vibrant and unconventional space features an eclectic collection of comic books, everyday objects, toys and other colourful installations. The museum is inexpensive to visit, and children under 10 can visit for free, making it a great value family outing.

Together, these two experiences make an excellent day out, giving your family a glimpse of Sète’s local traditions and creative energy – all without the crowds you might expect in more tourist-heavy coastal towns.

3. Enjoy the Free Montpellier Zoo with Kids

If you’re in or near Montpellier, the Montpellier Zoo (Zoo de Montpellier) is an enjoyable, free family outing. The zoo is currently undergoing extensive renovations to improve animal enclosures and create a vast African plain. Whilst work is scheduled to continue until 2028, the zoo remains open throughout this period, although some animals may be temporarily relocated.

Montpellier Zoo is home to a wide range of animals, including cheetahs, zebras, and white rhinoceroses. It’s far less touristy than many paid zoos and perfect for a relaxed, unhurried visit.  The spacious, natural setting and numerous picnic areas make it an easy outing, even with toddlers or mixed-age groups.

You can easily combine your visit with a stroll Montpellier’s historic centre for a well-rounded and stress-free day out.

4. Cross the River Orb by Boat to the Wild Beach of La Plage des Orpellières (Sérignan)

For a more natural beach experience away from busy resorts, head to La Plage des Orpellières near Sérignan. This wild beach forms part of a protected dune and marshland area, offering plenty of space for kids to run, explore and build sandcastles without the usual crowds.

Getting there is also half the fun!  From Valras-Plage, you can take a short boat ride with the Lily Passeur across the River Orb to reach the beach. For younger children especially, this feels like a mini adventure in itself.

La Plage des Orpellières is the perfect spot for a picnic, gentle nature walks, and a peaceful day by the sea. It combines simple pleasures with beautiful, unspoilt surroundings.

6. Adventure Underground at the Grotte des Demoiselles with Kids

If the weather isn’t cooperating or you’re simply looking for a change of pace, the Grotte des Demoiselles is an unforgettable underground experience in Hérault. The visit begins with a short funicular ride that leads to vast cave chambers filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.  For most children, this hidden underground world feels both magical and mysterious.

It’s worth noting that the guided visit lasts around 1¼ hours. It follows a 1 km route with approximately 550 steps in a naturally cool (around 15°C), dark cave environment that is damp and occasionally slippery.

Personal Tip: Although the visit is well organised, safe and suitable for children, it is not accessible with pushchairs.  As a result, it’s perhaps best suited to families with older children.

There is an entrance fee for this visit, but many families find it good value for such a memorable experience.

Personal Tip: The stones in the river bed can be slippery for little ones, so consider bringing water shoes.

Capestang is a peaceful and family-friendly place to access the canal in Hérault, with easy walking paths, open space for picnics, and a relaxed village atmosphere that works especially well with children.  It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a slower-paced Canal du Midi experience without the crowds.

La Magie de Noël features a programme of seasonal entertainment, offering activities that appeal to both families and adults including various concerts and parades. Highlights include the Marche aux Flambeaux which marks the opening of the festivities in Carcassonne. In addition, there is a spectacular sound and light display on the ancient stone walls of the medieval Château Comtal in La Cité de Carcassonne.

December is an appealing time to visit Carcassonne if you prefer fewer crowds and a slower pace. Temperatures are cooler than in summer, but are often still mild.

In December, the city feels calm and atmospheric, especially in the evenings when the Christmas lights are illuminated. La Magie de Noël adds a festive highlight to a winter visit without the busy feel of peak season.

• When: La Magie de Noël usually takes place from the beginning of December until the start of January (Wednesday 3 December 2025 until Saturday 3 January 2026)
• Best time to visit: Early evening, when the lights are fully illuminated.

The Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine is one of the most impressive caves in France – a vast underground world with a 250-metre drop, illuminated rock formations and a thrilling glass walkway suspended high above the chasm.

Kids of all ages will love crossing the drawbridge and exploring the surprises that lie within the medieval Cité. Within its walls, there are small museums, a haunted house and plenty of places to eat, grab crêpes or eat ice cream.

During the summer months, there are also family-friendly horse-drawn carriage rides and a small tourist train called the Citadel’s Little Train. Perfect for tired little legs!

If your children enjoy knights, stories and castle adventures, Carcassonne Castle will be a highlight of their trip.

5. The Forteresse de Salses

Located at the gateway to Aude, the Forteresse de Salses is a unique 15th-century fortress designed to withstand heavy artillery. Its sheer size and maze of tunnels, stables, courtyards and ramparts make it a brilliant playground for children who love to explore.

One of the great things about the Fortress of Salses is that there are fabulous comic strip information boards for children throughout this historic site. These are perfect for engaging children in its interesting history!

Another good point about this site is that the fortress is huge, so even in summer it rarely feels crowded. The ramparts are also accessible with a tour of the Keep and offer panoramic views towards the Pyrenees.

6. Terra Vinea

For something a little different, Terra Vinea takes you deep into the former gypsum mines of Portel-des-Corbières. The 800 metres of tunnels are atmospheric but very accessible for families, with multimedia storytelling, an impressive sound and light show and huge underground galleries.

Older kids and teens will love the scale of the caverns, the immersive projection chamber and informative displays that bring regional history and winemaking to life.

7. Château de Quéribus

If your family is ready for a mini adventure, Château de Quéribus is one of the most accessible Cathar castles in Occitanie. The short, steady climb up to the imposing castle ruins is manageable for most children.

The reward from the castle is spectacular 360° views over the Corbières mountains and all the way to the Mediterranean and Pyrenees on a clear day. Quéribus Castle is dramatic, photogenic, and a great introduction to the Cathar story.

In summer you’ll find a giant inflatable water park (Parc Aquaviva), plus pedalos, mini-golf and a treetop adventure course. It’s the perfect way to cool down after exploring Carcassonne.

However, the real showstopper is the family-friendly themed light display at Place Jean Jaurès, located right next to the Christmas Market. Running from 22 November 2025 to 11 January 2026, this dazzling display is free to enjoy daily.

Visitors of all ages will be enchanted by the fairytale landscape of twinkling lights. This year’s centrepiece is a festive ski piste complete with skiers and ski gondolas gliding overhead, all set above the water in the heart of the square.

The magical woodland theme features an enchanting trail for all the family that winds around Santa’s workshops. Along the way, you’ll discover his cosy post office, the bustling toy workshop and even the reindeer stable.

Discovering Capestang on the Canal du Midi

At the heart of Capestang stands the magnificent 14^th century Collegiate Church of Saint-Étienne. Its 45-metre-high Gothic bell tower is visible for miles across the surrounding vineyards. Climb to the top on a clear day for sweeping views over the village rooftops, the Canal du Midi and even the distant Pyrenees.

Surrounding the church in Capestang is a maze of narrow streets lined with traditional stone houses. Hidden within the village are shaded squares and small cafés where locals gather for a morning coffee or an evening apéritif.

Personal Tip: Pop into Café Déco (11 Place Ferrer) – a cosy coffee shop with a creative twist. Alongside great coffee and homemade treats, you’ll find local art, thoughtful gifts and regular creative workshops. It’s a lovely spot to pause and soak up the village atmosphere.

The village of Capestang retains a wonderfully authentic atmosphere. On market days (Wednesday and Sunday mornings), stalls fill the Place Jean Jaurès with regional produce, cheeses and wines from nearby estates.

One of the highlights of Capestang is the Canal du Midi. This historic waterway passes peacefully alongside the village, shaded by plane trees and lined with moored boats. The small canal port at Capestang is a pleasant place to sit and watch the boats glide by. Although boat hire isn’t available directly from Capestang, you can easily start a canal adventure from nearby Béziers, Colombiers or Le Somail. From here, peniche rides or self-drive boats make a memorable day on the water.

Don’t miss the 17th century stone bridge that crosses the Canal du Midi and overlooks the port of Capestang. The historic Saïsse Bridge is also known by locals as the ‘Pont de Pierre’.

Personal Tip: The Pont de Saïsse is a perfect spot for taking photos of the Canal du Midi and the port. From here, you can also capture lovely reflections. These are especially magical at sunrise or sunset when the light casts a golden glow over the water and boats. Just watch out for passing traffic and ducks!

In addition to walking the Canal du Midi, there are other interesting things to do in Capestang. The village may be small, but it’s full of charm and history, making it a delightful stop for visitors.

1. Discover the Gothic Splendour of the Collegiate Church of Saint-Étienne

The first thing you’ll notice as you approach Capestang is the Collegiate Church of Saint-Étienne. The vast Gothic bell tower of this French Historic Monument rises high above the village and surrounding landscape! It’s remarkable that such a small village is home to a monument of this scale! A reminder of the town’s importance during the Middle Ages.

Built in the 14th century by the Archbishops of Narbonne, the church impresses with its soaring 27-metre-high vaulted ceilings and beautiful stained glass. You can even climb the 45-metre-high bell tower for spectacular views across the Canal du Midi, the rolling countryside and the Pyrenees.

2. Step Back in Time at Le Château des Archevêques

Capestang is also home to another French Historic monument. Le Château des Archevêques is an imposing 12th-century medieval château that was once a residence of the Archbishops of Narbonne.

Its historic architecture and 15^th century painted ceiling make it an interesting visit for history lovers and photographers alike.

3. Explore Capestang’s Maze of Streets

Whilst you are in Capestang, make sure you take time to wander through its maze of narrow streets and passageways. Discover the village’s charming traditional stone houses, shaded squares and small cafés. This typically French village has a lively, authentic atmosphere all year round.

If you have time, the medieval village of Bize-Minervois is a short 20-minute drive from Capestang. After discovering the village, cool off in the River Cesse before visiting the nearby famous olive producer. Personal Tip: Capestang’s location makes it easy to combine a village stroll with canal walks or a day of different activities nearby, whether it’s history, food or unique transport adventures.

What is Terra Vinea?

Terra Vinea is a remarkable subterranean attraction in Aude, where history and winemaking combine in a single immersive experience. Following in the steps of gypsum miners, visitors descend 80 metres below ground to explore 800 metres of tunnels that are now used for aging wine and to house a wine museum.

But how did a gypsum mine become a wine cellar? We were already intrigued …

Miners and Winemakers

For nearly two centuries after 1807, the tunnels of Terra Vinea were mined for gypsum, a mineral widely used in plaster. Walking through the galleries felt like stepping back in time, where arched ceilings and chiselled rock faces still bear witness to the miners’ toil.

We found it particularly fascinating that many of these miners were also winegrowers. Above ground, they tended their vines and helped shape the region’s rich winemaking heritage.

Remarkably, the underground world of gypsum extraction was always closely linked with the vineyards of the Corbières. This unique blend of industrial history and viticulture still lives on today at Terra Vinea, albeit in a slightly different format!

From Mine to Cellar

After the gypsum mine closed in 1992, the cool, stable conditions of the tunnels made them ideal for aging wine, a practice that continues today at Terra Vinea.

Rows of wine barrels line the passageways and fill natural alcoves, creating a striking underground cellar. Educational displays also trace the history of winemaking in the Corbières from Roman times through the ages.

This combination of underground architecture and wine heritage creates an atmosphere that is both immersive and informative. The whole experience provides an insight into the lives of the miners-turned-winemakers and the evolution of winemaking techniques in the region.

A Link to the Corbières Landscape

Terra Vinea is also notable for its integration with the surrounding landscape. Positioned deep under the Corbières hills, visitors leave the Visitor Centre aboard a small train before entering the mine. As the train winds its way up the hill, there are stunning views over the Corbières landscape.

Even the start of the tour hints at the connection between the underground world and the vineyards above, highlighting the close relationship between the land, its resources and the people who shaped it.

Exploring the Underground Experience at Terra Vinea

Once inside Terra Vinea, visitors embark on a journey that blends history, atmosphere and storytelling. The carefully staged route brings the underground mine to life, offering moments of surprise and immersion that go far beyond a simple museum visit.

Depending on the season, visitors explore the tunnels either with a professional guide or unaccompanied with an audio guide. We visited in September and appreciated being able to discover the story of wine at our own pace.

The Descent into the Mine

After leaving the train, our small group filed through an unassuming door and we began our descent into the underground world.

A staircase of around 120 steps led us down through a carved stone tunnel to an impressive long, wooden gallery, evoking the effort and danger of mining life. As we walked, the echo of clanking mining sounds enhanced the sense of entering another world in another time!

The Cathedral Cellar

At the foot of the stairs, the space suddenly opened into a vast, vaulted chamber known as the Cathedral Cellar. Here, a stunning sound and light show transformed the underground mine into an immersive spectacle.

Lights, music and storytelling successfully showcased the history and beauty of the site. We thought the amazing natural acoustics of this underground space made the experience even more atmospheric and memorable. It was certainly a striking introduction to the underground world of Terra Vinea!

Walking the Tunnels

Beyond the impressive Cathedral Cellar, the route continued through around 800 metres of spacious, dimly lit galleries. The clever lighting maintained a sense of being underground while still ensuring visitors feel comfortable and can see!

Along the way, the tunnels opened into larger chambers and passages that charted the history of winemaking in the region. Displays included old winemaking machinery and vehicles, a Cooper’s Workshop showing how wine casks were built and even a full-size horse-drawn cart!

These displays sat alongside other highlights such as a Gallo-Roman villa and a medieval tavern carved into the rock. These replicas showed how wine has been at the heart of local life across the centuries.

Rows of wine barrels, interpretive panels and original black and white film footage, tied the story together. We got a real sense of the tunnels’ layered history with their continued use for wine aging today.

Wine Tasting and Visitor Experience

After emerging from the depths of the mine into daylight, we made our way back to the Visitor Centre on foot for the complimentary wine tasting which is included in the ticket price.

During our visit, we sampled four wines (one white, one rosé, and two reds) as well as a local Muscat. The tasting was unhurried and gave us time to appreciate the different types of wine and grape varieties.

An attentive staff member talked about each wine and was happy to answer any questions. We left with a bottle of the rosé we enjoyed most, making a perfect souvenir of our Terra Vinea experience!

Tips for Visiting Terra Vinea

Getting There and Parking

Terra Vinea is located in the small village of Portel-des-Corbières, around 20 km south of Narbonne. The easiest way to reach this attraction is by car. There is ample parking on site, suitable for cars and camper vans. In addition, there is a charging station available for electric vehicles.

Guided and Self-Guided Visits

Out of season, visits to Terra Vinea are usually self-guided with an audio guide. Conveniently, this allows you to explore at your own pace. However, in the peak summer months, there are guided tours that provide additional context and an opportunity to ask questions.

Accessibility

At the start of the visit, a tourist train transports all visitors uphill from the Visitor Centre to the entrance of the mine.

Once inside the mine, there is a descent of about 120 steps. However, it is worth knowing that after the first staircase, the descent is staggered.

To enjoy your visit, good walking shoes are recommended. Warm clothing is also advisable as the underground temperature at Terra Vinea is around 16°C, even in summer.

Personal Tip: The tunnels themselves have good headroom and are wide and comfortable to walk through. Personally, we did not feel claustrophobic despite being underground.

When to Visit Terra Vinea

Terra Vinea is open year-round, but the experience varies with the seasons. The cool underground climate (around 16°C) makes it a refreshing escape in the heat of summer but expect more crowds during peak season.

Personal Tip: We visited on a September afternoon and found it very quiet at Terra Vinea. We explored the tunnels at our leisure with a handful of other visitors. This made the visit feel even more atmospheric and immersive.

Dining and Boutique

For those wanting to make a day of their visit, Terra Vinea has an on-site restaurant called Le Grenache. This is located directly above the boutique in the Visitor Centre.

Open daily for lunch, it’s a convenient spot to enjoy a meal before or after exploring the tunnels. The boutique itself is also worth a browse, offering a selection of Terra Vinea wines, regional products and souvenirs to take home.

Who Will Enjoy Terra Vinea?

Terra Vinea will appeal to a wide range of visitors: history lovers, wine enthusiasts, families with children and anyone curious about unusual sites. While the wine tasting is clearly for adults, the underground galleries, reconstructions and light show provide plenty of interest for all ages.

Ticket Prices and Visit Duration

A visit to Terra Vinea typically lasts around 1.5 hours. Admission prices are:

• Adults: 16.50 €
• Teenagers aged 13–17: 14.90 €
• Children aged 5–12: 9.90 €

The ticket includes access to the underground tunnels, historical displays and the complimentary wine tasting for adults.

If you’re visiting Terra Vinea, there are several other attractions in the area that make for easy additions to your itinerary.

African Reserve of Sigean

Just a 10-minute drive from Terra Vinea, the Sigean African Reserve is a wildlife park home to hundreds of animals from across the globe. It’s a great option for families and anyone interested in wildlife, making for a perfect half-day visit.

Forteresse de Salses

Around 30 minutes by car, the Forteresse de Salses offers a fascinating glimpse into military architecture and history. Visitors can explore the ramparts, towers and keep, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Fontfroide Abbey

Approximately 30 minutes away, Fontfroide Abbey combines history, architecture, and peaceful rose gardens. The abbey’s vineyard is an added highlight for wine enthusiasts, linking nicely with the Terra Vinea experience.

Narbonne

The first thing you’ll notice when arriving in Brousse-le-Château by car is the River Tarn. In summer, locals head straight to the water to swim, paddle or just cool off on a hot afternoon. Personal Tip: Don’t miss the old churchyard – the graveyard offers stunning panoramic views over the Tarn valley, making it one of the most photogenic spots in Brousse-le-Château.

At the top of the village stands the 9th-century fortified Château de Brousse. This well-preserved château dominates the landscape and is listed as a French Historic Monument. In particular, it features a full enclosure with ramparts and towers.

Unusual Things to See & Do in Peyre Village, Aveyron

Peyre is a village that invites exploration at every turn, offering a blend of historical architecture, natural beauty and delightful surprises. Here are some highlights not to miss:

Troglodyte Cave Church

Carved into the rock, the Église Saint-Christofol is a remarkable example of troglodyte architecture. Originally built in the Romanesque period, the church was fortified in the 17^th century and later renovated in the 1980s.

Today, the church is a French Historic Monument and unique exhibition space, hosting contemporary art displays. During our visit, we saw an interesting exhibition of art made from everyday objects, including unused clock mechanisms.

Personal Tip: Step inside the Eglise Saint-Christofol to fully appreciate its remarkable troglodyte architecture. The church is literally sculpted into the rockface!

Located in front of the Eglise Saint-Christofol, you can still see the original round water basin that served the villagers for centuries. Its stone structure is beautifully preserved and adds to the historic charm of the site. Playfully, a toy crocodile now rests in the fountain!

Rose Stained Glass Window

Just a short walk from the troglodyte church, the Église Saint-Christophe offers a contrast with its more recent construction.

This church is a striking landmark in the village and features a beautiful rose stained glass window of Saint Christopher.

Ancient Communal Oven

Nestled in a quiet corner of the village, the beautifully restored communal oven is a testament to the community’s past.

Once a central hub for baking bread, this large stone oven now stands as a charming relic of daily life in bygone days.

Intriguing Dinosaur Figurines

As you wander through Peyre, you’ll notice small dinosaur figurines perched on windowsills, in flowerpots and along its ancient stone walls.

Presumably, these playful decorations are a nod to the dinosaur footprints found in the hills above the village. They bring a fun, unexpected charm to the village while celebrating its prehistoric history.

Therapod Dinosaur Footprints Above Peyre

Just above the village, in the Thérondels area, you can embark on a short hike to discover dinosaur footprints embedded in the limestone. There are approximately a dozen tracks to spot, each around 40-50 cm long.

According to palaeontologists, these footprints belong to theropod dinosaurs that roamed the region during the Early Jurassic period. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with the distant past while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Aveyron countryside.

Canoe on the River Tarn

For those who enjoy adventure, the River Tarn offers a scenic way to gain a unique perspective of Peyre from the water.

From Plage Saint-Rome, visitors can hire a canoe and paddle 15 kilometres down the Tarn valley towards the village of Peyre. It’s the perfect chance to discover the village and admire the cliffs (Raspes du Tarn), lush greenery and tranquil waters along the way.

Peyre is a charming village nestled along the Tarn River, just a short drive from Millau. Here’s how to make the most of your visit:

Getting There by Car

Peyre is located approximately 8 kilometres west of Millau. To reach the village, take the D41 road along the Tarn River, following signs for Peyre.

Along the way, you’ll pass under the iconic Millau Viaduct, offering a striking view of this engineering marvel from below before arriving in the peaceful village.

Parking in Peyre

There is a large pay car park at the entrance of the village when approaching from the direction of Saint-Rome. Visitors must park here, as parking within the village is for residents only. The village is an 8-minute walk from the car park, along a flat pavement.

Personal Tip: The car park has a flat fee of €2 for all-day parking, but you need to download the payment app in advance to pay. Bring plenty of water and a hat for the walk, especially on hot summer days.

Exploring Peyre on Foot

The village is small enough to explore in an hour or two but please note that there is an 8-minute walk from the car park and a fairly steep sloped ascent into the village. Wear comfortable shoes and consider accessibility if you have mobility issues.

Seeing Peyre by Canoe

As mentioned previously, for a different perspective, you can hire a canoe from Plage Saint-Rome. Approaching Peyre from the water is a refreshing way to see the village, especially on hot, sunny days.

Best Time to Visit Peyre

Peyre is delightful year-round, but spring and summer are the best times to enjoy the countryside in full bloom. Late afternoon is ideal for photography, as the cliffs and houses are bathed in warm, golden light.

The Village of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon

Even though we didn’t spend much time in the village itself, Roquefort-sur-Soulzon left a lasting impression. Nestled at the foot of the Combalou limestone cliff, the village is picturesque and is home to a surprising number of Roquefort cheese producers.

It was fascinating to see just how many different caves and brands operate here. Apparently, during the cheese producing months, the whole village fills with the unmistakable smell of Roquefort!

To gain a bird’s-eye view of the village and the surrounding landscape, we took a short, steep walk above the Société restaurant. At 650 metres above sea level, we found an orientation table and the ruins of an 11th-century church.

From this vantage point, we could see how the village clings to the limestone cliff that hides the rich Roquefort cheese-making traditions that define this part of Aveyron.

Roquefort Société Caves Guided Tour

The guided tour of the Roquefort Société caves takes you deep underground in the Combalou limestone mountain. It’s a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the cool, humid environment that has been used for centuries to age Roquefort cheese.

Even if you visit outside the production season (like us!), it is fascinating to explore the underground caves and learn about the history and craftsmanship behind this iconic blue cheese!

Start of the Visit

The tour begins in an underground cinema room with an immersive film projection titled “Aux Origines des Caves Société”. This clearly explains the geographical formation of the caves and the story of how Roquefort cheese was discovered.  However, we will let you discover the legend for yourself!

Immediately after the film, our guide shared a huge map of the layout of the Société caves. This really helped us to orientate ourselves and to understand the scale of the network of underground caves.

Discovering the Fleurines

One of the most fascinating parts of the tour was learning about the fleurines.  These natural air channels in the limestone rock create the ideal airflow and humidity for aging Roquefort cheese. The fleurines are an essential part of Roquefort’s unique environment.

During the guided tour, we were able to discover several fleurines and to experience first-hand their power of natural ventilation. Incredibly, the first fleurine that we encountered was over 1 km long!

Later in the tour, another unique experience was to walk through one of the narrow fleurines.

Feeling brave, I even plunged my hand into holes in the rock face to feel the sensation of cold air rushing from deep within the mountain!

Learning About the Roquefort Cheese Making Process

In another underground chamber, we watched a second interesting film to understand more about the process of making Société Roquefort cheese. By now, it had become pretty cold underground and Olivier was wrapped up warm!

This film was beautifully shot and clearly explained the Roquefort cheese-making process from start to finish.

Although the film was narrated in French, there were English subtitles. Some quick interesting take aways from the film included:

• Only Lacaune sheep milk from within a 120 km radius of the village are used to make Société Roquefort cheese.
• 3 different types of penicillium are cultured in the Société caves from a microscopic airborne fungus that occurs naturally. Don’t worry, it’s apparently harmless to visitors!
• There are only 3 Société Maître Affineurs who possess the skill and expertise to control the cheese-making process and to decide when the Roquefort is ripe! Hopefully, they have some apprentices for the future!

Discovering the Oldest Société Cave

After the film we had the opportunity to wander around and admire Cave Reynes which is the oldest of the Société caves. In the past, Caves Reynes stored the maturing Roquefort cheese. It is a magnificent space that strongly resembles a cathedral.

Experiencing the Cheese Cellars

Another highlight of the tour was exploring three levels of the eleven storeys of cellars! Here, penicillium is added to the cheeses which are are then stored on their sides on oak shelving.

Unfortunately, there was no Roquefort cheese maturing in the cellars when we visited in mid-August. Instead, replica cheeses were on display.

Although disappointed that we couldn’t experience the smell of Roquefort permeating the cellars, we could still appreciate their size and layout. As the cellars were in the process of being cleaned, we also learned about this natural process using salt.

Personal Tip: To see real cheese maturing in the Société Roquefort caves, plan your visit between January and the end of July. Be aware that outside of this season, the cheeses on display are representations.

Tasting Société Roquefort AOP Cheese

At the end of the tour, we huddled around simple wooden tables in the boutique area to enjoy what we had all been looking forward to – the cheese tasting! Fortunately, we had the chance to sample all three Roquefort cheeses made by Société:

• Caves Abeille (green label)
• Cave des Templiers (black label)
• Caves Baragnaudes (gold label) – This is my personal favourite as it’s tangy with a long-lasting flavour!

Helpfully, our knowledgeable guide suggested the order in which to taste them. We also had the option to taste the Roquefort with a pain d’épices (a type of gingerbread) which worked surprisingly well!

Certainly, the tasting was a memorable way to end the visit, bringing together everything we’d learned about the caves, the fleurines and the cheesemaking process.

Société Shop and Exhibition

After the cheese tasting, we were free to visit the Société shop which sells all three varieties of Société Roquefort cheese along with other souvenirs.

Beyond the shop, there is also an interesting exhibition that explains more of the history of Société’s world-famous Roquefort cheese.

Personal Tip: Don’t miss the fabulous display of vintage Société advertising posters near the shop that document the marketing of Roquefort cheese over the years.

Practical Information for Visitors

Opening Hours & Tickets

Roquefort Société cave tour tickets start at €7.50 for adults and €4.50 for children aged 7-15, with children under 6 free. There are three types of visits available:

• Le Souffle des Saveurs – The basic hour long guided tour (the one we experienced), available throughout the day. A tasting of all 3 Roquefort AOP cheeses is included.
• Le Souffle des Créations – A more premium option that combines the cave visit with a tasting of all 3 Roquefort AOP cheeses paired with different ‘flavours’ and wine. This option is offered once a day.
• Le Souffle des Caves – The most exclusive tour with one of the three Société Maître Affineurs. This tour also includes a tasting of all 3 Roquefort AOP cheeses paired with different ‘flavours’ and wine. However, this option is only available in July and August.

Conveniently, the caves are open all year round. However, booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak summer months. This will ensure that you avoid disappointment and secure your preferred tour time.

How to Get There

You can easily visit the Roquefort caves in Roquefort-sur-Soulzon from Millau by car, with a journey of about 40 minutes.  There is a good amount of free on-site parking, although camping cars are not permitted.

If you are staying in Hérault or Aude, it is perfectly possible to make a day trip to the Roquefort Société caves from Béziers (approximately 1hr 30 minute drive) or Narbonne (approximately 2 hour drive) via the A75.

Tips for your Visit

• Visit between January and the end of July to see and smell actual Roquefort cheese maturing in the caves.
• Wear comfortable shoes as the cave floors can be damp and uneven.
• Wear something warm as the caves are naturally cold (around 10°C), even in the summer!

• Avoid bringing a pushchair as there are many steps within the caves.
• Bring your telephone or camera to capture memories of the visit. Both photographs and videos are permitted inside.
• Leave animals at home as they are not allowed in the caves.
• Consider enjoying lunch in one of the two Société restaurants that are open daily: La Cave des Saveurs (closed Tuesdays) and Les Fleurines (closed Wednesdays). However, reservations are recommended.
